A Himalayan kingdom that rewards slow travel

Bhutan lies in the eastern Himalaya between India and China: steep forested valleys, white-walled fortresses and prayer flags strung across the passes. Its constitution requires that at least 60 percent of the land remains under forest, and Buddhism shapes everyday life, from butter lamps in village temples to the great dzongs that still serve as both monasteries and district offices.

Tourism follows a policy of high value, low volume. Visitors pay a Sustainable Development Fee that helps fund conservation, free health care and education, and travel is led by licensed Bhutanese guides. The country feels unhurried, and a journey here works best when someone local plans it with care.

Festival season

Tshechus are religious festivals held each year in dzong and temple courtyards in honour of Guru Rinpoche. Monks and lay dancers perform masked cham dances handed down for centuries, and families travel in from the surrounding villages to watch and receive blessings.

Dates follow the lunar calendar. Paro Tshechu usually falls in spring and Thimphu Tshechu in autumn.

Places to visit

Thirteen districts, each with its own dzong, festivals and walks. Begin with the western valleys, or travel east into quieter country.
