Paro Tshechu

Bhutan’s great spring festival in the courtyard of Rinpung Dzong.

About the festival

The Paro Tshechu is one of the largest and most popular festivals in Bhutan. It takes place each spring at Rinpung Dzong in Paro, usually in March or April, over several days of masked dances performed by monks and lay dancers.

Before dawn on the final day, a giant thangka depicting Guru Rinpoche is unrolled on the wall of the dzong. Crowds gather in the half-light to receive its blessing, and it is taken down again before the sun touches it.
