Getting to Bhutan

Flights into Paro and Gelephu, overland entry from India, and arriving in the country.

By air

Bhutan has two international airports, at Paro and Gelephu. Paro is the main gateway, served by the national airlines Drukair and Bhutan Airlines. Flights operate from cities including Bangkok, Delhi, Kolkata, Dhaka, Kathmandu, Dubai and Singapore. On a clear day, the approach to Paro offers views of the high Himalaya.

Overland from India

Visitors can also enter Bhutan by road from India through the border towns of Phuentsholing, Gelephu, Samdrup Jongkhar and Samtse. A guide is required for travel beyond the border towns.

Money and connectivity

The currency is the ngultrum, which is pegged one to one with the Indian rupee. US dollars and Indian rupees are widely accepted, and ATMs and many businesses in towns accept Visa and Mastercard, though cards may not work in rural areas. Most hotels have Wi-Fi, and local SIM cards are available in larger towns.
