Festivals of Bhutan

Masked dances, blessings and whole communities in their finest clothes: a guide to Bhutan’s tshechus and other festivals.

What is a tshechu?

Tshechu means “tenth day”. These religious festivals honour Guru Rinpoche, the master who brought Buddhism to Bhutan, and are held in the courtyards of dzongs and temples across the country. Over several days, monks and lay dancers perform cham, masked dances that tell stories and teach Buddhist ideas, while atsaras, masked clowns, entertain the crowd.

For Bhutanese families a tshechu is a time to gather, picnic, wear their best clothes and receive blessings. At some festivals a giant thangka, called a thongdrel, is unrolled before dawn on the final day; seeing it is believed to bring great merit.

When festivals take place

Festival dates follow the Bhutanese lunar calendar and change every year. As a guide:

  • Late winter and spring: the Punakha Drubchen and Tshechu, and the Paro Tshechu.
  • Autumn: the Thimphu Tshechu, and the Jambay Lhakhang Drup in Bumthang with its fire ceremony.
  • 11 November: the Black-necked Crane Festival at Gangtey Monastery in Phobjikha.
  • Winter: the Trashigang Tshechu in the east.

We confirm exact dates for your year when the official calendar is published.
