Best time to visit Bhutan
A season-by-season guide to weather, festivals and wildlife.
Bhutan through the year
Bhutan can be visited year round, and each season has its own appeal. Because altitude ranges from subtropical valleys to high passes, conditions vary across the country.
- Spring (March to May): mild days, rhododendrons in flower and the Paro Tshechu. Haze can hide distant peaks later in the season.
- Summer and monsoon (June to September): green and lush, with rain heaviest in the south. Landslides can disrupt roads, but there are few visitors.
- Autumn (late September to November): clear skies, harvest colours and the Thimphu Tshechu. This is the busiest season.
- Winter (December to February): crisp, sunny days and cold nights, with snow common above 3,000 m. Black-necked cranes are in Phobjikha and mountain views are often at their best.
Planning around your interests
For trekking, aim for spring or autumn. For festivals, see our festival guide. For cranes, visit Phobjikha between late October and February. For quieter travel and clear views, consider winter.
