Etiquette and dress in Bhutan

How to dress and behave respectfully at temples, dzongs and festivals.

At temples and dzongs

  • Wear smart-casual clothing that covers your shoulders and knees.
  • Remove hats, and follow your guide’s instructions on removing shoes.
  • Photography is usually not allowed inside temples and shrines.
  • Walk clockwise around chortens, temples and prayer wheels.

Everyday courtesy

  • Ask before photographing people, especially monks and older villagers.
  • Smoking in public places is restricted; ask your guide where it is permitted.
  • Drones are not allowed without a permit obtained in advance.
  • Tipping your guide and driver is appreciated but not compulsory.

At festivals

Dress neatly, never walk across the dance ground and avoid flash photography. See our festival guide.
