Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about visas, fees, guides, seasons and booking.
Do I need a visa to visit Bhutan?
Yes, all visitors need a visa except Indian nationals, who need a permit. We apply for your visa when you book. See visa and SDF.
What is the Sustainable Development Fee?
A daily government fee, currently US$100 per adult per night, with lower rates for children and Indian nationals. Our prices include it.
Can I travel without a guide?
No. Bhutan’s rules require visitors to be accompanied by a licensed guide, and a guide is needed to enter dzongs and monuments.
Can I travel on my own?
Yes. All our journeys are private, whether you travel alone, as a couple or as a group.
When is the best time to visit?
Spring and autumn are the most popular, but Bhutan can be visited year round. See best time to visit.
How many days do I need?
Six or seven days is enough for the western valleys. Ten days adds central Bhutan, and twelve or more lets you travel east. See our tours.
How do I get to Bhutan?
Most visitors fly into Paro; Gelephu also has an international airport, and you can enter overland from India. See getting to Bhutan.
Do I need travel insurance?
It is no longer compulsory, but we strongly recommend it, especially for treks.
What should I wear?
Smart-casual clothes that cover shoulders and knees at religious sites, and layers for changing temperatures. See etiquette and dress.
Can I use cards and ATMs?
Visa and Mastercard work at ATMs and many businesses in towns, but cards may not work in rural areas. US dollars and Indian rupees are widely accepted.
