Day by day
The full itinerary, day by day. Every journey is private, so we can adjust the pace, hotels and stops to suit you.
Day01
OvernightThimphu
Arrive in Paro and drive to Thimphu
Your Ultimate Himalayan Journey begins with the flight into Paro International Airport, celebrated for its mountain views and dramatic approach between forested ridges. On landing, your local guide welcomes you outside the terminal, and you set off by road for Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital, about an hour and a half away.
The road follows the Paro Chhu through a narrow valley to Chuzom, where three chortens mark the confluence with the Wang Chhu, then continues north past villages and orchards to Thimphu at around 2,320 metres. After checking in, take an evening stroll through the city’s craft shops and cafés, where you can browse textiles, masks and handmade paper and get a first feel for life in the capital. Taking the first day gently helps your body adjust to the altitude before the more active days ahead.
Day02
OvernightThimphu
Thimphu sightseeing
Explore the capital’s landmarks with your guide. The day begins at the Buddha Dordenma, a giant gilded statue of the Buddha that sits on a ridge above the city, with wide views over the valley and a hall holding around 125,000 smaller Buddha images. From there, visit the National Memorial Chorten, where local people circle the white chorten and spin prayer wheels throughout the day, offering a glimpse of everyday devotion.
Next, see the takin at the Motithang Takin Preserve and hear the story of how the national animal is said to have been created by Drukpa Kunley. In the late afternoon, visit Tashichho Dzong, the majestic fortress beside the Wang Chhu that houses the seat of Bhutan’s government and serves as the summer residence of the central monastic body. Its courtyards are especially beautiful in the evening light.

Day03
OvernightPunakha
Thimphu to Punakha via Dochula Pass
Cross Dochula Pass at 3,100 metres on the road from Thimphu to Punakha. The pass is marked by the 108 Druk Wangyal chortens and a temple, and on clear mornings it offers sweeping views of the high Himalaya to the north. After a stop for tea, the road winds down through forest into the subtropical Punakha Valley, almost 2,000 metres lower.
Walk through the rice fields to Chimi Lhakhang, the Fertility Temple associated with Drukpa Kunley, the Divine Madman, a gentle walk of around half an hour each way. In the afternoon, explore Punakha Dzong, set at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. Built in 1637 and the seat of Bhutan’s government until the 1950s, it is the winter residence of the central monastic body and one of the most breathtaking buildings in the Himalaya.

Day04
OvernightPhobjikha
Punakha to the Phobjikha Valley
Today’s drive takes you from the warm Punakha Valley up into the cool highlands of the Black Mountains. The road passes Wangdue Phodrang, where the rebuilt dzong stands on a ridge above the rivers, and climbs through forest to the Phobjikha Valley, a peaceful glacial basin at around 2,900 metres that is protected as a conservation area.
Visit Gangtey Monastery, which overlooks the valley from its forested ridge and is one of the most important Nyingma monasteries in western Bhutan. Then set out on the Gangtey Nature Trail, an easy walk of about two hours that descends through pine woods and meadows, past farmhouses and potato fields, offering panoramic views of the wetland where black-necked cranes spend the winter. The evening in Phobjikha is calm and quiet, with the valley often wrapped in mist.

Day05
OvernightParo
Phobjikha to Paro
Enjoy a tranquil morning in Phobjikha before setting off. Between late October and February, stop at the Black-necked Crane Information Centre, run by the Royal Society for Protection of Nature, to watch the endangered cranes through telescopes and learn about their migration and the community’s role in protecting their habitat.
Then drive back to the Paro Valley, retracing your route over the mountains and Dochula Pass, through terraced fields, villages and alpine forests. It is a long day on the road, broken by stops for lunch and views, and you arrive in Paro in the late afternoon or evening. Rest well tonight: tomorrow begins the Bumdra trek, which climbs high above the valley for a night under the stars, so your guide will brief you on what to pack for the overnight camp.
Day06
OvernightCamping at Bumdra
Bumdra trek with overnight camping
Today you begin the Bumdra trek, a short but rewarding overnight hike above the Paro Valley. The trail climbs steadily from the road through blue pine forest and then rhododendron and alpine meadows, gaining height towards the Bumdra monastery area, whose name is often translated as the “cave of a thousand prayers” or “rock of a hundred thousand prayers”, a place long associated with meditation.
As you climb, the views open over the Paro Valley and, on clear days, towards the snow peaks of the Himalaya. The camp is set on a high meadow above 3,800 metres near the monastery, where a support crew prepares tents and meals. Watching the sunset over the mountains and the stars appearing in the clear night sky, far from any town, is an unforgettable experience. Bring warm layers, as nights at this altitude are cold.
Day07
OvernightParo
Descend to Tiger's Nest and hot stone bath
After breakfast at the camp, with the morning light on the mountains, begin the descent. The trail passes through rhododendron forest and leads down past small temples and meditation retreats clinging to the hillside, approaching Taktsang, the Tiger’s Nest, from above rather than from the valley floor, an approach that few visitors experience.
Visit the monastery, built around the cave where Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated after arriving on the back of a tigress in the 8th century. Its temples, lit by butter lamps and perched on a sheer cliff about 900 metres above the valley, make it Bhutan’s most iconic spiritual site. Then continue down the main trail through pine forest to the road. End your adventure in Paro with a traditional hot stone bath, a perfect way to soothe tired legs after two days on the mountain.

Day08
Depart from Paro
After a final breakfast, with the mountains around the Paro Valley in view, your guide and driver transfer you to Paro Airport for your onward journey. Depending on your flight time, you may have a little time for a last walk in Paro town or a stop at a viewpoint over Rinpung Dzong and the valley.
As your flight climbs out of the narrow valley, look out for the snow peaks of the Himalaya on clear days, a fitting farewell after a journey that has taken you from the capital and the great dzongs of the west to the crane valley of Phobjikha and the heights above Tiger’s Nest. At the airport your guide bids you farewell with a heartfelt “Tashi Delek”, wishing you good fortune for the road ahead.
